Why Families Are Choosing Phuket Over Bali, Dubai, and Portugal

Why Families Are Choosing Phuket Over Bali, Dubai, and Portugal
Something has shifted in the way international families think about relocation. The conversation used to be simple: Bali for the lifestyle, Dubai for the money, Portugal for the EU passport. Phuket was a holiday destination.
That's changed. Over the past few years, Phuket has moved firmly into the conversation as a serious long-term base for families — and in several important respects, it's pulling ahead of the alternatives.
Here's why.
Education: Phuket Has Quietly Built a Strong International School System
For any family with school-age children, education is non-negotiable. Phuket now has a genuine range of accredited international schools — British, American, and IB curricula — with several consistently rated among the best in Southeast Asia. HeadStart British International School, British International School Phuket, and QSI International School are all established and well-regarded.
Bali's international school options have improved but remain limited and concentrated around Canggu and Seminyak — fine if you live there, less practical if you don't. Dubai's schools are excellent but expensive, often adding ฿400,000–฿600,000 per child annually in fees alone. Portugal's international schools are solid but depend heavily on location, and outside Lisbon or the Algarve the options thin out quickly.
Phuket offers quality, choice, and relative affordability in the same package. That combination is rarer than it sounds.
Cost of Living: More for Less Than Dubai, Better Value Than Portugal
Dubai is the obvious benchmark for the tax-free, high-income expat life — but it comes at a cost. Rent, schooling, dining out, cars, and utilities add up fast. A family living comfortably in Dubai is typically spending significantly more than the same family would in Phuket at an equivalent or higher lifestyle level.
Portugal surprised many people with how quickly costs rose post-pandemic. Lisbon rents have doubled in four years. The Golden Visa scheme drove property prices up sharply before it was reformed. What once looked like affordable European living has become considerably less so.
Bali is cheap, but cheap in ways that reflect infrastructure limitations rather than value. Healthcare, schooling, and legal security for foreign property ownership all carry real costs that don't show up in the coffee price.
Phuket sits in a strong middle ground — genuinely good value for a tropical lifestyle, with property prices, dining, and daily costs that remain reasonable without the infrastructure trade-offs Bali requires.
Healthcare: A Decisive Advantage
This one matters more than families often admit until they need it. Phuket has two internationally accredited private hospitals — Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Mission Hospital — with standards, equipment, and specialist availability that rival private facilities in major Western cities. Costs are a fraction of what the same care would cost in the UK, US, or Australia.
Bali's healthcare remains a genuine concern. Serious cases are often evacuated to Singapore or Bangkok. Dubai's healthcare is good but expensive, and outside the main private hospitals the quality drops. Portugal's public system is under strain; good private care is available in Lisbon but access outside the capital varies.
For families with young children or aging parents visiting, Phuket's healthcare provision is a quiet but significant factor in the relocation decision.
Safety, Stability, and Quality of Life
Thailand is politically stable in the ways that matter most to expatriate families on a day-to-day basis. Phuket specifically has a well-established expat community, low violent crime rates, and an infrastructure built around international residents over decades.
Bali has its charm but also its limitations — traffic, flooding in wet season, and an informal legal environment that requires careful navigation. Dubai offers strong safety but a social and cultural environment that not every family finds suits them long-term. Portugal is safe and culturally rich, but the bureaucracy around residency, taxes, and property ownership has become considerably more complex.
Phuket offers a straightforward, enjoyable life. Good roads, reliable internet, international supermarkets, a year-round social calendar, and a community that has made this work for years. That reliability matters when you're thinking about where to raise children, not just where to spend a winter.
Property: Ownership That Makes Financial Sense
Foreign nationals can own condominium units in Thailand under freehold title — a clean, internationally understood ownership structure within the 49% foreign quota. Quality managed residences in the Laguna and Bang Tao corridor offer rental yields of 6–9% net, giving families a property that works as an asset even when they're not in residence.
Dubai property is strong but increasingly priced at a premium. Portugal's Golden Visa reforms have complicated the investment case. Bali's leasehold-only structure for foreigners, combined with a less formal legal environment, introduces risks that many families find uncomfortable once they look closely.
Phuket's ownership structure, combined with its yield profile and long-term capital growth, makes it competitive as a financial decision — not just a lifestyle one.
