Area Guide: Bangtao
Where is Bangtao?
Bangtao Beach sits on Phuket's west coast within the Cherngtalay sub district, roughly halfway between Phuket International Airport, about 25 minutes north, and Patong, 30 to 35 minutes south. It's a long stretch of coastline, around 7km, running between Surin Beach to the south and Layan Beach to the north, with the beach blending seamlessly into Layan at its northern tip.
What makes Bangtao unique?
Bangtao is where Phuket's luxury resort scene meets everyday local life. The Laguna Phuket complex, home to resorts like Banyan Tree, Dusit Thani, and Angsana, anchors the area, but the same stretch also has local beach restaurants, a lagoon, and a genuine neighbourhood feel around Boat Avenue. It's one of the longest beaches on the island and one of the least crowded given its size, backed by green hillside at its southern end. It's also become one of the fastest growing areas for expats and property investors in the last couple of years, with long term residents and families increasingly choosing it over the busier southern beaches.
Why is Bangtao a nice place to stay or live?
It's laid back but polished: a proper long beach without the density of Patong or Karon, resort level facilities on your doorstep, and a genuinely liveable, family friendly community built up around it. Non guests can usually book spa treatments or day access at the Laguna resorts, and the surrounding area has a good spread of schools, enrichment centres, and green space for a more settled, family oriented lifestyle.
Where's good to eat, drink, and hang out in Bangtao?
Boat Avenue, at the entrance to the Laguna complex, is the social centre of the area: an open air dining and shopping strip that's become the most fashionable stretch in north Phuket. Worth knowing: CUT Grill & Lounge for steak and cocktails by the lake, Bampot Kitchen & Bar for modern European food, Nanami Yakiniku for Japanese BBQ, and Joya Restaurant & Cocktail Bar for its art deco interior and lakeside terrace. Right next door, Porto de Phuket adds more options including The Farmer and The Fisherman and the French bistro Little Paris. For the beach itself, Catch Beach Club is the go to spot for cocktails and loungers on the sand. On Friday nights, the Bang Tao Night Market, also known as Fun Friday Avenue, sets up near Boat Avenue for street food and a more local, casual scene.
Melbourne, Cafe, Roastery, Bakery is one of our favourite breakfast spots, a roastery and bakery on Lagoon Road in Cherngtalay with power outlets at every table, making it as popular with laptop bound remote workers as it is with anyone after a good coffee and a proper breakfast.
Bangtao Boat Club, previously known as Hugo Hub, is our favourite sunset spot, a laid back beachfront bar and restaurant set almost on the sand right by the boat pier on Bangtao Beach. It runs more like a beachfront food court, with several kitchens covering Thai, Italian, Mexican, and Japanese food sharing one terrace, and it's a genuinely scenic spot to watch the sun go down over the water.
What schools and amenities are near Bangtao?
HeadStart International School's Cherngtalay campus is just 4km from Bangtao Beach and was built specifically to serve families in Cherngtalay, Laguna, and Bangtao. QSI also has a campus in Cherngtalay, convenient for the same catchment. Bamboo Valley, a nature based kindergarten, is 5 to 10 minutes away. UWC Thailand is a bit further out, around a 15 minute drive north in Thalang, but is commonly used by families based in this area. For everyday amenities, Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket cover groceries, cafés, and shops, with the Laguna resorts providing spa and recreational facilities close by.
